KITCHEN AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME
Behind every smooth running summer camp is a team of dedicated and hardworking support staff. ACAWE Kitchen and Maintenance Programme (KAMP) provides an easy and affordable way for students to work and travel in the US over the summer. Our KAMP participants work in a support role on a camp in the USA either in a kitchen, dining room, office or general housekeeping or maintenance. Food and accommodation at camp are provided at no cost to you. There is usually a great team spirit among camp support staff. You can work alongside friends from home but it is also the perfect atmosphere to meet new people from all over the world. Enjoy the sunny weather and life on camp and then travel for up to 4 weeks around North America with new friends when camp is over. As an ACAWE designated partner in Jamaica, JOYST Youth Exchange acts on their behalf to screen and select suitable applicants. ACAWE is on the spot to offer full-time help and support while you live and work in America.
Most KAMP staff are employed in this area. In the kitchen, sometimes you can expect to be dishwashing or pot washing, with automatic machines, cleaning work areas and generally helping in the all-round preparation and serving of food.
This will involve some kitchen work, plus serving food, setting up, clearing and cleaning tables, floors, etc. for each meal. You could be preparing food, or helping to serve it to campers and other staff. You may also be hired as a dining room supervisor.
As with other kitchen staff, your presence will be required before each meal and will involve getting up quite early in the morning for preparation or working later to ensure the job is finished properly. Previous experience is a mandatory requirement.
